Casting Lizzy Caplan as the anti-Zooey Deschanel is probably the smartest thing New Girl could have done. It’s still far from perfect but the last two episodes were the closest this show has come to being an enjoyable sitcom instead of a showcase for the “adorkableness” of Zooey Deschanel. The thing about New Girl is that hardly anyone cares about the actual show. Deschanel fans will watch and love it even when the episodes are bad and Deschanel detractors will scoff and hate it even when the episodes are good. Most people’s opinions have nothing to do with writing or acting or anything other than what that person already thinks of Zooey. It’s common. It’s possible I only liked these two episodes because of my love for Lizzy Caplan. Who knows!
Regardless, last night was pretty fun! It was an out-of-character episode for New Girl, one that was weirdly meta as an obvious take on the “Great Zooey Debate of the Internet.” It was Caplan as snarky critics and angry blog posts about overrated cupcakes vs. Deschanel as essentially herself and the more positive posts on HelloGiggles. The show was smart to not have a clear winner — Caplan is the mean lawyer but joins the crochet circle! Deschanel loves ribbons but is still smart and tough! — and it works well, especially since Caplan’s sticking around for a bit. New Girl’s sticking around for a bit, too, and it’s never going to be a show about full of biting social commentary or characters that you truly care about so it’s nice to know it can at least pull off a decent and funny episode once in a while.
But the theme song still has to go.

i like this post so hard.  we watch this show, but i love/hate it.  everything here is spot on.  i want to punch her in the face 2/3 of the time, but i love the goofy guys.  AND THE THEME SONG IS SO RIDIC.
